Ancient Greece at BMAG!

This week, a very excited Y3 visited Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery as part of their Gods & Mortals topic - on arriving, they carefully made their way to the top floor to observe and sketch some of the artefacts in the Ancient Greek gallery and made notes of how old items were and where they were found looking at the notes underneath each artefact.

Children enjoyed using their maths skills to work out the age of the objects and it started some interesting conversations about where Greece and Cyprus were in the world, their BC/AD understanding, 'fragments' of pottery, 'excavating' and 'archaeology' - all words that the children had learned in the Flints and Stones topic last term.  It was so good to see that they are applying their knowledge and understanding!

When we had finished in the gallery, the children took part in an art workshop, where they learned how the Greeks added relief to their clay pots and jugs and also how they added finer details to their designs. They drew the shape of an owl on to paper and then painted around it (which gives the orange on black effect) and then they used a scratchboard to show how they would have added finer details to faces and bodies (the black on orange effect) - Even Mrs Miles had a go too!

Most children had never visited BMaG before and said that they had been inspired to revisit with their families. As they were only on the bus 15 minutes, they deduced that it mustn't be that far from our school!

Greek Immersion Day

To welcome the children back and hook them into our new topic, Great Gods and Mere Mortals, Year 3 had a Greek immersion day. As soon as the children arrived in the morning, we dressed them up as Ancient Greek citizens. We created leafy wreaths to wear and sang Greek themed songs. In the afternoon, we took the children into the hall and treated them to a culinary experience featuring a range of greek delicacies such as olives, feta cheese and tzatziki.

Cadbury World

Yesterday, year 3 had a scrumdiddilyumptious trip to Cadbury World. They discovered the origin of chocolate and how the beans are grown, harvested, dried and finally transported to the U.K to be made into delicious chocolate. They also had the opportunity to sample some of lip-smacking chocolate that Cadbury World creates. Followed by an exciting 4D cinema experience, rounded off with a fabulous time on the outdoor play equipment. Phew! What a busy day !

Stone Age Stewed Fruit

Year 3 have been studying instruction texts and as part of the process we made some Stone Age stewed fruit using a selection of fruits, hazelnut and honey as an added sweetener. The process not only allowed the children to get stuck in practically but also informed their own writing of instructions following the making of the fruit stew.
